Kathleen
A. Schoener: Author
Kathleen has 24 years of teaching experience. She moved to Illinois in 2001 and
although her teaching career ended, her work with animal welfare organizations
began. During the past five years, she has dedicated her time to writing humane
education lessons and dog bite prevention lessons. Her ability to understand how
young learners think and learn has been instrumental in the development of these
creative and highly captivating lessons.
In Kathleen's words: "As
an educator, I have always recognized the importance of motivating children through
creative and meaningful activities that are somehow connected to other ideas or
other curricular areas. Learning does not take place in isolation or with isolated
concepts. It is a process that must first engage learners and then take them to
performance - where ultimately their own learning is recognized. Not
only does the 4Mat Instructional Model promote this more holistic approach to
learning, it does much more. It reaches all learners. I hope other educators find
these lessons to be engaging, thought provoking, meaningful and well designed.
Most importantly, I hope my work will help to end the alarming number of dog bites
that occur each year in this country."
